The Senior Manager of Facilities and Engineering will lead the overall strategy for the site facilities team, ensuring that the mechanical and utility engineering groups receive the necessary support. This role is critical in driving technology transfers and site projects while providing leadership, mentorship, and guidance throughout the Cell Therapy (CTx) network. Additionally, the Sr. Manager will collaborate with the Global Engineering team to maintain alignment on critical initiatives and operational goals.
What will you do?
- Maintain mechanical and utility system safety, collaborating with EHS to implement RAs, LOTO plans, labeling, and routine inspections, ensuring compliance with bio technologies and infrastructure requirements (HVAC, EMS operations, process equipment, automation, maintenance systems).
- Ensure compliance of all equipment and system design documentation with cGMP regulatory standards, maintaining organized records and demonstrating a solid understanding of GMP & environmentally compliant facility and engineering operations.
- Provide mentorship to improve critical utilities, minimize downtime, and establish robust equipment and utility standards.
- Develop and track key performance indicators aligned with departmental and product supply objectives, ensuring accurate reporting of area metrics and achieving results in an innovative environment.
- Lead and mentor staff, aligning team efforts with site goals, operational needs, and regulatory directives
- Identify and call out risks proactively, leading multi-functional teams to investigate and resolve system issues while driving corrective actions and ensuring solid knowledge in the validation of equipment, utilities, and systems.
- Develop a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence
- Serve as Facility and Utility SME for change controls, validation protocols, and document management
- Oversee vendor management, including security, groundskeeping, pest control, GMP facility cleaning, HVAC maintenance, instrumentation, and janitorial services
- Compile and analyze data for monthly reports and key departmental metrics, ensuring performance evaluations drive continuous improvements.
- Ensure regulatory compliance, collaborating with internal and external Quality and Regulatory teams to maintain operational excellence.
- Manage external contacts, including contractors, consultants, and service providers, ensuring alignment with business objectives and operational goals.
- Identify and mitigate facility risks that may impact safety, quality, delivery, cost, or personnel, implementing proactive solutions.
- Develop operating budgets for facility initiatives
- Work multi-functionally with teams in Manufacturing, Quality, Process Engineering, and Research to support facility design, construction, qualification, and maintenance.
- Supervise construction activities, ensuring engineering documentation adheres to applicable codes, regulations, and industry standard processes.
- Handle Environmental Monitoring Systems (EMS) and Temperature Monitoring Systems, ensuring compliance, reliability, and operational integrity.
- Lead site safety initiatives, maintaining records and partnering with Safety personnel to uphold compliance and standard processes.
- Develop and train the Facilities team, fostering career growth, knowledge-sharing, and high-performance capabilities.
- Perform duties as assigned to support operational excellence, facility reliability, and business success.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Life Science or related field and 10+ years of related experience
- Or Master’s degree and 8+ years of experience.
- Or Associate’s degree with 15+ years experience
Experience
- 5+ years directly in lead Engineering or/and leadership positions – required
- 3+ years in a management role
- Biotech or cell therapy manufacturing experience preferred (ISO 7 GMP cleanroom and manufacturing facility).
Working environment
- ISO 7 and ISO 8 clean room facilities and normal laboratory environment with biohazard precautions.
- May be exposed to blood or bodily fluids that may be capable of transmitting diseases.
- Frequent exposure to outdoor environment and non-company facilities.
- Will be working with liquid nitrogen and subzero freezers.
- Must wear PPE due to safety requirements in designated lab areas.
- May be called on to workdays or hours other than routinely scheduled hours, work overtime hours, or potentially work through breaks, if vital.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $141,800.00–$189,000.00.This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy.
