What to Expect

As a Sled Test Engineer in the Passive Safety team, you will work as a member of Tesla’s Passive Safety test team primarily based in the dynamic sled test facility. This facility offers a sophisticated crash simulation capability and its operation requires a high attention to detail and a comprehensive knowledge of the physics of crash. The primary objective of this role is to conduct the crash simulation (sled) testing required to develop the vehicle components and vehicle restraint systems. In this position you will coordinate the testing execution and be responsible for the physical set up of tests and for all aspects of test preparation, test execution and post-test analysis. You will collaborate closely with test technicians for day to day test responsibilities in the sled lab. Working closely with CAE and product engineers, you will also be responsible for test request generation, data processing and reporting.

What You’ll Do
  • Configure, set up, and operate specialized sled test equipment
  • Lead the preparation and set up for test fixtures, equipment and test samples
  • Divide up and precisely communicate day to day test related responsibilities among the technician group to maintain daily lab efficiency and keep up with a challenging test schedule
  • Process and interpret test data, generating the appropriate graphs and plots required to communicate test results
  • Write comprehensive test reports, documenting the results of testing and to communicate issues identified during testing
  • Work with internal engineering teams to develop and validate performance of the vehicle and it’s passive safety systems
  • Identify test incidents and write test incident reports
  • Lead post-test tear downs and inspections, documenting and reporting results
  • Develop/Improve the supporting processes, procedures and test documentation
  • Operate and maintain safe working practices and environment considering the safety of yourself and other employees at all times
What You’ll Bring
  • Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in vehicle safety or vehicle safety focused graduate program is strongly preferred
  • Deep understanding of vehicle safety concepts and analysis tools
  • Working knowledge of CAD and structural analysis software strongly preferred (CATIA, SolidWorks)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish effective working relationships with engineering and test teams, both within and outside Tesla
  • Experience working in cross functional teams to drive product development
  • Ability to interpret crash data and video data generating valuable outputs
  • Experience in test development and instrumentation
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally (up to 10% travel)

    Expected Compensation

    $80,000 - $156,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

    Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
