Sr. Manufacturing Engineer, Coatings Factory Layout
Tesla
Tesla’s manufacturing engineering team is at the forefront of developing first-of-a-kind processes which allow us to produce amazing vehicles at best-in-class quality and rate in a safe and ergonomic environment. The Coatings team is seeking a senior manufacturing engineer for factory layout. You will design and develop technically complex 2D/3D layouts for finishing/coating our products. This includes layout development, specification and validation, design for manufacturing, equipment specification and design, and installation and commissioning. The candidate will work closely with internal cross-functional teams, external vendors, and technology partners on process development from concept to production. This role requires a thorough understanding of manufacturing engineering fundamentals, substantial skill with 2D/3D CAD, and aggressive design optimization.
- Develop 2D factory layouts in collaboration with engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms. Familiar with finishing processes, conveyance strategy, and the overall understanding of material flow plans for the factory
- Work collaboratively to develop a utility matrix and create 2D layouts for the positioning of equipment and utilities. Devise cost-effective 2D layout solutions for optimized part presentation and sustainability
- Partner with the packaging and material flow team to innovate cost-effective 2D layout solutions that optimize part presentation, increase packing density, and enhance sustainability for both automated and manual loading/unloading processes
- Progress from 2D/3D layout solutions to developing a 3D factory simulation to accurately visualize and improve the manufacturing process and material flow
- Design manufacturing equipment including safety gear, jigs, fixtures, and skids
- Issue RFQs for equipment production or procurement with detailed specifications
- Lead equipment design review sessions and guide vendors to meet operational and safety standards
- Lead cross-functional collaboration and build relationships across the organization, including coordination with other process, equipment, mechanical, electrical and support disciplines
- Lead product design for manufacturability (DFM) and sustainability, including risk analysis, FMEA, and cost steering
- Manage large-scale projects, including development of timing plans, risk identification, and project status reporting
- 5 or more years of experience in a technology-based industry, where automated methods are utilized in the finishing/coating of consumer products
- Hands-on experience with the development of functional and aesthetic finishing process layouts, material flow, and conveyance & factory simulation for automotive paint or powder coating
- Utilizing factory simulation software (Process Simulate, FlexSim, Simul8, Digital Twin, WinMod, Iphysics) to plan, analyze, and optimize manufacturing processes
- Experience with AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit (SolidWorks, Inventor, or Catia are preferred)
- Proficient in the development and deployment of PFMEAs
- Knowledge of automated equipment systems and tools (robotic, vision, material handling, Conveyors, PLC, HMI, etc.)
- Travel required 25%
- Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience
