If you join the Azure Core Economics team, you will join a group of economists, data scientists, and software engineers within Azure Engineering that tackles a variety of data-intensive, distributed computing challenges related to cloud economics that are of critical importance to Microsoft.

Our team collaborates with a wide range of other teams in Microsoft on problems such as pricing optimization, demand estimation and forecasting, capacity management and planning, fraud detection, virtual machine bin packing, and others. Our software engineering team in India aids in the development of novel software products, improvements, and research incubations that are aligned to this core mission.


As a Senior Software Engineer in the Azure Core Economics team, you will play a critical role in developing software for a variety of economics-related products in cloud computing that leverage large amounts of data to drive improvements to the Azure platform and its customers. This opportunity will allow you to gain experience working on cutting-edge problems in the intersection of applied economics, engineering, and data science, develop deep expertise in the economics of the cloud business, and become increasingly adept at developing engineering solutions for data-intensive products. The team is supportive of flexible work, and candidates may work from home up to 50% of the time.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science OR related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, OR Python OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ years of experience in a technical leadership role
  • 1+ years of relational database and SQL skills with working knowledge of data warehousing concepts, including technical architectures, infrastructure components, ETL/ELT and reporting/analytic tools and environments (such as Cosmos DB, Apache Beam, Hadoop, Spark, Pig, Hive, MapReduce, and Flume).
  • 1+ years experience working within a cloud environment such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud Platform including,
    • Experience applying software development skills to economics-oriented and data-intensive products and problems and
    • Experience deploying statistical or machine learning models at scale.

Responsibilities

• Leads by example within the team by producing extensible and maintainable code and applying metrics to drive the quality and stability of code

• Drives efforts to ensure the correct processes are followed to achieve a high degree of security, privacy, safety, and accessibility
• Drives identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for products, applications, services, and platforms
• Identifies other teams and technologies that will be leveraged and how they will interact and acts as a key contact for leadership to ensure alignment with partners’ expectations
• Leverages subject-matter expertise of product features and partners with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., economists, data scientists, engineers, researchers, program managers, and business planners) to drive project plans, release plans, and work items
• Organizes work into smaller sets of tasks as part of an overall roadmap
• Drives the refinement of products through data analytics and makes informed decisions in engineering products through data integration.
