Senior Battery Cell Modeling Engineer, NPI
Lucid Motors
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Battery Cell Modeling Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and implementing battery cell models to support new product introduction.
Role
- Develop, maintain, and continually improve a suite of electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical cell models of cells being integrated into new Lucid products
- Collaborate with various cell engineering functions by leveraging models to identify performance limits of the cell and accelerate the cell integration process
- Identify and address potential limitations and areas for improvement in existing modeling approaches
- Use models to explain various degradation and failure modes of battery cells based on first principles
- Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in battery technology and modeling techniques.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in battery cell modeling and simulation, including developing electrochemical and thermal models.
- Comfortable assessing physical systems and proposing boundary conditions and governing equations to model said system
- Solid understanding of thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport that underpin Newman-style electrochemical cell models, as well as the limitations of these models
- Strong grounding in general modeling concepts like parameter identifiability and sensitivity, model parameterization, and model validation
- Strong communication skills to effectively present findings and to provide guidance on the conclusions from simulation in a product-driven environment, especially to audiences unfamiliar with cell modeling
Preferred
- Prior experience in using models to inform decision making for cell integration into a product
- Experience writing collaborative code using tools for traceability and version control like git and Jira
- Experience modeling mechanical and thermal phenomena in cylindrical and prismatic li-ion cells at the millimeter and centimeter length scale
- Experience modeling physics of LFP cathodes
- Fluency in Simulink, ability to implement feedback control and incorporate system controls into battery simulation studies
- Experience running simulations at scale on the cloud
- Familiarity with testing commercial Li-ion battery cells
- Proficiency in using COMSOL multiphysics, and/or other battery modeling tools
Education
- PhD, or Masters with 3+ years of relevant work experience, or Bachelors with 5+ years of relevant work experience
