Sr Facilities Engineering Associate/Deputy Facility Manager

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) NERSC Division has an opening for a Sr Facilities Engineering Associate/Deputy Facility Manager to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will provide hands-on support to the NERSC Division for activities encompassing planning, support, operations, site preparation, and maintenance of the NERSC computer room, and associated multi-megawatt building support of power and cooling infrastructure. You will also support the staff office areas including employee and equipment relocations, telephone services coordination, ordering of furniture, equipment, and supplies, track, inventory and reconcile LBNL/NERSC assets, assist in the prompt resolution of EH&S issues and provide backup to the NERSC Building 59 Facility Manager (QEW3).
What You Will Do:
- Operate the complex mechanical systems that support the multi-megawatt computer facility.
- Under limited direction, provide resolution to a diverse range of complex technical problems where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
- Monitor, support, and assist with facility maintenance.
- Respond 24x7 to facility issues, as part of rotating responsibility.
- Connect and disconnect electrical whips to racks from existing electrical panels and/or PDUs.
- Maintain and update an accurate labeling designation for all electrical equipment in the computer room
- Co-ordinate activities with NERSC managers and staff.
- Plan, implement and support computer facility site preparation activities.
- Read and interpret blue prints, drawings, and technical documents as required
- Provide input to design and planning of, and provide support to implementing facility modifications required to support changing high performance computing hardware. Update and maintain the computer floor drawings.
- Analyze environmental data and suggest modifications to the computer room to improve energy efficiency.
- Provide point of contact for facility Maintenance Contractor’s personnel and subcontractors.
- Interface with site security staff for visitors, vendors, and subcontractors
- Determine need for subcontractor services and work with Procurement to obtain the services. Manage and assess the activities of subcontractors to ensure the successful completion of work
- Develop facility maintenance and project budgets
- Analyze the performance of the mechanical and electrical systems and implement performance and energy efficiency improvements
- In conjunction with NERSC management, plan and manage facility projects
- Provide QEW (qualified electrical worker) support to the division
- Assist with supervision of one or more employees
- Plan and implement facility maintenance including preventive maintenance and on-site spares
- Assist with office moves and generate and maintain space planning documents
- Provide point of contact for facility staff for office furniture
- Support the maintenance of property management inventory and the resolution of discrepancies
- Act as receiving agent for materials and property delivered directly to Building 59 Loading Dock.
What is Required:
- A minimum of 4 years of experience in facility management, operation and maintenance.
- Must have a Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW 2 grade) certification
- Must be qualified to obtain National Fire Protection Agency CESCP (Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional) status
- Experience with the maintenance and operation of HVAC equipment
- Experience with the use of Building Management Control Systems (BMCS)
- Experience managing vendor contracts and personnel
- Possess the skills and mechanical aptitude to design and build various mechanical equipment including Unistrut support systems, general seismic support systems and methods, etc.
- Solid fundamental understanding and experience relating to employee and contractor (vendor) safety including knowledge of OSHA requirements.
- Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E, 72, 75, 13 & 25
- Demonstrated project management expertise.
- A proven track record of interacting with a diverse staff population at all levels throughout the organization
- Ability to independently prioritize and coordinate a wide range of activities while effectively and diplomatically interacting with groups or individuals with demands that have the potential to exceed the available resources
- Demonstrated proficiency in commonly utilized business computer-based software applications
- Ability and willingness to respond 24x7 as required within a scheduled On-Call duty structure
- Excellent oral and written interpersonal skills, demonstrating effective, clear, and concise communication abilities
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with the general operational functions and procedures of data center or scientific computing facilities
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant technical program area
- Use of AutoCad, or similar drafting software, for space planning
Notes:
- This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
- The full salary range of this position is between $99,000 to $167,100 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $111,396 to $136,152 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

- This position requires substantial on-site presence, but is eligible for a flexible work mode, and hybrid schedules may be considered. Hybrid work is a combination of performing work on-site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA and some telework. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab. Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
