Job Description
Primary Function of Position
The Advanced Energy team at Intuitive is a multidisciplinary group dedicated to developing innovative medical devices for robotic platforms, technologies, and programs. We focus on creating groundbreaking solutions that address significant challenges and fill gaps in the healthcare system. The team member in this position will report directly to the technical lead of the advanced energy product. They will be responsible for the technical development of advanced energy products at Intuitive, with a primary focus on the mechanical design of new generator systems for advanced devices and exploring innovative system concepts for new surgical robotics applications. The ideal candidate should have a hands-on approach, deep technical knowledge in relevant mechanical areas, and a proven track record of successful product development projects. They must thrive in a high-energy team environment and be capable of making informed recommendations under the typical time constraints and uncertainties of new product development.
Essential Job Duties
- Apply system-level thinking to develop designs for new user-friendly products.
- Drive creative problem-solving in mechanical design for electro-mechanical assemblies, from concept to fabrication.
- Enhance design for manufacturability and ensure smooth transfer to production.
- Finalize mechanical requirements and specifications for the design.
- Manage and drive design improvements and hold engineering design reviews to address reliability/usability issues while leading, advocating, and enforcing best practices in design, development, and testing to ensure product manufacturability, robustness, and function.
- Conduct comprehensive engineering investigation, including thermal and stress analysis.
- Collaborate with engineers in electrical, firmware, software, test, and other fields to build innovative solutions and ensure requirements and specifications are met.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
- Proficiency in precision mechanical and mechanism design
- Working knowledge of various fabrication methods such as, CNC machining, injection molding, 3D printing, sheet metal stamping, and assembly techniques for medical, consumer, automotive, and/or industrial products.
- Excellent skill in 3D CAD modeling and manipulation (SolidWorks preferred), as well as finite element analysis (FEA).
- Good understanding of materials and structural mechanics.
- Proven understanding of component selection criteria, and design for reliability and manufacturability
- Working knowledge of electronics and circuits.
Working Conditions
- Minimum Bachelor's degree with 12+ years of experience with mechanical/electromechanical design, analysis, testing, and/or manufacturing, Master with 10+ years of experience, or PhD with 8+ years of experience.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience working with PCB designers and exposure to PCB layout and PCBA mechanical design.
- Knowledge of and experience in selecting materials, manufacturing methods, and surface treatments for mechanical components
- Experience with medical device product development / CFR 21 Part 820 design controls, IEC 60601 and the risk management process highly desired.
