The Lead, Network Engineer designs, analyzes, plans and modifies network components supporting customer communication implementation activities. The Lead, Network Engineer works on problems of diverse scope and complexity ranging from moderate to substantial.

The Lead Network Support Engineer will be responsible for providing operational support for Humana's enterprise network which spans across multiple lines of business from government, retail clinics and pharmacies, distribution centers to the traditional corporate campus and datacenters. The primary responsibility of the Network Operations Manager will be to provide the highest quality network infrastructure environment support by ensuring the network operations team is monitoring the performance and health of the enterprise network and running point as the restoration lead for the network team on outage calls.

Team Lead responsibilities for these areas of concentration include, but are not limited:

  • Respond to escalations for all major and significant incidents (P0 - P2)
  • Serve as a primary liaison for network operations partnering with other infrastructure teams such as the technical operations team (Level 1), server, storage, security, SRE and application teams
  • Maintain and operate network solutions (routers, firewalls, switches, wireless, appliances) across the enterprise landscape with a focus on reliability, throughput, scalability, and security which will help us scale with the needs of the business
  • Provide a level of escalation in response to incidents/requests regarding network performance and configuration, including off hours escalations
  • Manage vendors and service providers encompassing but not limited to negotiations, licensing, adherence to service level agreements, and ensuring all support and maintenance contracts and services are up-to-date and providing appropriate coverage.
  • Obsolescence - Work to consolidate or replace legacy technologies with newer services, hardware and applications that drive continuous improvement and mitigate cybersecurity and resiliency risks.
  • Support the management of Network OpEx budget and make recommendations for future budget forecasting and planning needs.
  • Communicate status updates to Manager of IT and other Senior business leaders where necessary.
  • Research and recommend new technologies and solutions to meet business needs.
  • Technology roadmap development, management, and maintenance.
  • Documenting and updating all network infrastructure and supported business processes.
  • Capacity and performance planning.
  • Definition and development of operational KPIs and metrics.
  • Disaster recovery/business continuity integration.
  • Continuous knowledge and skills improvement
  • Responsibility of network operations which supports over 1800 applications, 80K users, 300+ locations, multiple datacenters, multi-cloud environments
  • Monitor and tune network infrastructure to identify and eliminate issues and potential bottlenecks
  • Maintain network documentation, run-books, diagrams, and network assets in the configuration management database
  • Develop and continually improve guidelines and procedures related to Network management including process and efficiency improvement
  • Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards to improve our service offerings

Required Qualifications:

  • BS/BA in a technical or scientific field. Or 8+ years in related experience.
  • 5+ years of experience architecting, implementing and supporting large-scale cloud network infrastructure, with advanced experience designing enterprise cloud network solutions.
  • Network engineering certification such as CCNA through CCNP or the equivalent
  • 5+ years of project leadership experience.
  • 8+ years of Layer 2/ Layer 3 network architectural design (LAN/WAN) and engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of experience working with MPLS, BGP, OSPF, and other LAN/WAN technologies.
  • Strong experience supporting large-scale datacenters and remote sites.
  • Experience with Cisco networking equipment.
  • Experience with VPN technologies.
  • Knowledge of QoS and network security functions (firewalls, VPN, IPS, etc).
  • ISP and/or carrier backbone engineering experience/knowledge.
  • Ability to manage complex multi-organizational projects.
  • Must possess strong communication skills (oral and written) and technical understanding to take complex technical concepts and present them to a range of technical and non-technical audiences (including senior leadership).
  • Experience with implementing and operating a software-defined network environment (VXLAN, EVPN, Vipetla etc.).
  • Vendor management skills (hardware/software security vendors as well as third party vendors).
  • Experience working with Data Center Colocation facilities and virtual network fabric provided by vendors such as Equinix and Mega-Port.
  • Able to mentor peers on engineering team in terms of continuing education and daily project support.

  • WAH requirements: Must have the ability to provide a high speed DSL or cable modem for a home office. Associates or contractors who live and work from home in the state of California will be provided payment for their internet expense.

  • Satellite and Wireless Internet service is NOT allowed for this role.

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.


$129,400 - $177,900 per year


This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
