The Role

Fidelity Investments Workplace Investing (WI) organization is seeking an experienced mainframe Software development manager to join our Development team within Stock Plan Services (SPS) who is passionate about driving quality and scalable mainframe solutions. The selected candidate will provide technical leadership on a globally distributed team using a Mainframe technology stack. This role demands significant collaboration with members of various business and IT groups throughout the software and product development lifecycle.

As the SPS Mainframe Chapter Leader, in an agile structure, you blend deep technical knowledge with a passion for coaching, mentoring, and developing associates. You are deeply committed to improving the value delivered to our customers, establishing or partnering to develop technical standards for your area, and influencing strategic decisions, solution development, and work priorities. You will directly manage a team of chapter members who primarily work within autonomous squads across product areas but report directly to you. You are dedicated to helping them grow and develop in their technical knowledge area and ensuring alignment on the 'how' of their work. You are committed to developing your technical expertise and knowledge to bring the latest thinking to your role and empower others with that knowledge.


People Management

  • Allocate chapter member expertise across product areas and manage chapter member growth and development in partnership with Product Area and squad Leaders

    • Identify current and future skill requirements for chapter members in partnership with Squad Leaders

    • Align chapter members in partnership with Product Area and Squad leaders across squads and product areas to ensure the best utilization of talent while also building learning opportunities and learning day content to develop skills

  • Manage, develop, and empower associates within the Chapter to aid in career growth and enable the delivery of increased value in their teams

  • Enable an agile and frictionless organization by demonstrating agile behaviors

  • Create an environment that champions inclusivity, sustainable pace, psychological safety, transparency, and open and honest feedback

Stakeholder Management

  • Proactively partner with Chapter Area, Product Area, Center of Excellence, and Squad Leaders to:

    • Define and align chapter strategy with squad/product area objectives and roadmap

    • Plan and execute roadmaps and initiatives, measuring and reporting on progress to leadership

    • Help shape and evolve Chapter area-wide best practices and strategies, setting standards ensuring work performed is aligned with established roadmaps

    • Influence strategic backlog and prioritization decisions related to your area of expertise

    • Measure performance through established objectives and KPIs to deliver agreed-upon business, technology, and people results

    • Continuously improve and encourage an agile way of working

    • Remove impediments to delivering value

Technical Expertise

  • Establish technical standards and expertise for the area

  • Stay current on the evolving needs and requirements of customers

  • Maintain knowledge & expertise on internal & external market & industry trends & changes

  • Actively share insights, knowledge, industry practices, and developments across the organization

  • Ensure scalability and stability of our mainframe platform which underpins a growing line of business

The Expertise and Skills You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree (or foreign education equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Mathematics, or a closely related field

  • 10+ years of experience in software development and 5+ years of experience as a senior leader in mainframe brokerage or stock plan services systems and application development.

  • Experience leading, coaching, mentoring, and developing people and teams

  • Experience identifying and acquiring talent needs

  • Resource planning and talent allocation across large organizations

  • Financial services experience

  • Agile leadership experience

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Continuous improvement

  • Data-focused approach to decision making

  • Experience in mainframe application development, automation, and support, utilizing COBOL, CICS, DB2, JCL, VSAM, MQ-Series, and SQL


The Team

You work in partnership with Squad Leaders, and other Chapter Leaders aligned to Stock Plan Services within Workplace Investing. You evolve and sustain our innovative, agile culture by demonstrating and promoting Fidelity and agile leadership behaviors.

Use business and technical knowledge to translate the vision for divisional initiatives into business solutions by developing and maintaining complex stock plan services software applications and the lifecycles that implement them on a mainframe platform running under a Z/OS environment.

The base salary range for this position is $103,000-$218,000 per year.

Placement in the range will vary based on job responsibilities and scope, geographic location, candidate’s relevant experience, and other factors.

Base salary is only part of the total compensation package. Depending on the position and eligibility requirements, the offer package may also include bonus or other variable compensation.
