The Internal Communications team partners with the Executive Director of R&I communications to design and implement communication strategies that share and amplify the mission, opportunities, priorities, policies and procedures for and accomplishments of Research & Innovation to internal audiences. Together and in close collaboration with the central Research & Innovation Communications group, this Internal Communications cluster team will produce web content, stories, social media content, newsletters, and other communications.

Your Mission

As a Communications Specialist for Internal Communications, your primary focus and responsibility will be to create content for various platforms, including websites, newsletters, social media. You will develop relationships with stakeholders and campus communications partners to understand their needs and create relevant content.

As part of project management, you will create communication plans, set deadlines, and track assets for the Internal Communications portfolio. You will work closely with the Internal Communications manager and the creative content team to distribute information. Lastly, you will analyze performance data, researching trends and making recommendations for future projects based on metrics and other feedback.

This is an exceptional opportunity to help support the pioneering work of our interdisciplinary researchers and outstanding staff across Cornell.

When evaluating your candidacy, we will look for evidence of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Writing and editing experience: Must be an experienced writer and editor who can work on deadlines as part of a high-performing team while managing multiple projects. Must be able to develop communications for a variety of platforms, audiences, and stakeholders; familiar with AP style. Have an understanding of integrated brand management and how to create pieces that align with brand guidelines.

  • Collaboration skills: Skilled in building and maintaining positive relationships with a wide variety of individuals and stakeholders across the university.

  • Independence and initiative: Able to work independently, including taking initiative when appropriate.

  • Judgment: Uses sound judgment in decision-making, including setting and managing priorities and meeting competing deadlines.

  • Detail oriented: Must have strong copy editing and proofreading skills. Must be able to craft comprehensive communication plans based on conversations with internal clients and/or stakeholders, taking into consideration the needs of diverse audience segments. Should be able to draw meaningful feedback from metrics and other assessments.

  • Must demonstrate a positive, purpose-oriented work ethic.

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

  • Tools:

    • Proficient with website management platforms Drupal and WordPress.

    • Strong skills with Microsoft Office products including Word, Outlook, and Teams.

    • Experience with design software programs including Canva and the Adobe Creative Suite.

Additionally, while not required, the following experience is a plus:

  • Experience with communicating about technical or scientific topics for a non-specialist audience.

  • Experience using Constant Contact or other email distribution tools.

  • Understanding of and experience with following web accessibility standards.

  • Skills in or interest in developing skills in usability studies and user experience writing to improve the experience of audiences.

  • Experience with or interest in using AI as a tool to support efficient and effective communications.
