Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.

This is a 12-week internship during summer 2025.

Coinbase is seeking software engineer interns to join our team to build out the next generation of crypto-forward products and features. You will solve unique, large scale, highly complex technical problems, bridging the constraints posed by web-scale applications and blockchain technology. You will help build the next generation of systems to make cryptocurrency accessible to everyone across the globe, operating real-time applications with high frequency, low latency updates, and managing the most secure, dockerized infrastructure running in the cloud.

As a SWE intern you will be hired into one of our five Product Groups (Base, Developer, Consumer, Institutional, and Platform) or into our Security org based on your interests and skill-set. Please review the team descriptions below and select your top choice in your application.

  • The Base Product Group engineers enables seamless Coinbase product integrations, easy fiat onramps, and powerful acquisition tools for developers to serve the 108m verified users and to access the $100B+ assets in the Coinbase ecosystem. Powered by the open source OP Stack and created by Optimism, Base is an Ethereum L2 network that is secure, low-cost, and developer-friendly built to scale the crypto economy, the foundation for continuing the on-chain journey.
  • The Consumer Product Group engineers strive to make the Coinbase retail app the easiest-to-use and fastest experience for accessing the crypto. In 2024, our goal is to be the #1 self custody wallet measured by MTU’s and download share. Wallet is the future of web3 and of Coinbase. Suite of products include: Coinbase app, advance trade, dapps, and staking.
  • The Developer Product Group engineers aim to create solutions so builders can build in crypto. Their suite of products include: WaaS and Cloud. Wallet-as-a-Service (WaaS) is an API-based crypto platform that will enable developers to interact with heterogeneous cryptocurrency networks (such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Cardano) in a simple, secure and scalable way. Coinbase Cloud provides web3 APIs, services, and infrastructure to power the next generation of software builders.
  • The Institutional Product Group enables the foundations of Coinbase's institutional business supporting thousands of large financial institutions. We enable institutions to custody their digital assets and participate in the crypto economy in a secure and safe way. We take pride in building a scalable & secure crypto platform supporting hundreds of assets and enabling crypto participation with staking, governance and web3 gateways. The team has interesting work on building cutting-edge crypto technologies, scalable infrastructure and UI surfaces across web, mobile and browser extensions in a fast-paced industry with an opportunity to build several new initiatives.
  • The Platform Product Group’s mission is to build a trusted, scalable, and compliant platform to maximize velocity, efficiency and quality. They build the foundations that can be used by multiple products and teams at Coinbase so that users can have a consistent and high-quality experience. There are many teams that make up the Platform Product Group. We are currently hiring backend engineers to join our pods within our Identity, FinHub and Payments teams.
  • The Security Team is core to the Coinbase mission and has been a key competitive differentiator for us as we scale. If you’re looking to fight on the front lines in a high-intensity environment, we’d like to speak with you about joining our security team. As a Software Engineer in Security Platform Engineering, you will be working on building capabilities and solutions for a variety of security use cases. Our team builds and maintains the platforms critical for security, compliance and privacy at Coinbase. You will be working on designing innovative services and solutions for the Workforce IAM Platform, enhancing employee access management efficiency and improving security oversight.
