The Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) is one of the most innovative divisions within Caterpillar. In PSLD, as within all of Caterpillar, our priority is our customers and helping them build a better world. We touch nearly every element of the services value stream from procurement to design and manufacturing to distribution. PSLD is responsible for Aftermarket Parts Distribution of Cat Parts, Integrated Logistics, segment Procurement and the design and manufacture of Wear Components (Undercarriage and GET) and Maintenance Components (Seals, Tubes & Hardware, Hose & Couplings, Fluids and Filters).

As the Manager, Manufacturing Engineering you will be responsible for supervising staff responsible for automated manufacturing systems, manufacturing processes, gaging and checking equipment, tooling and work standards. The Manager, Manufacturing Engineering will work closely with Product Engineering, Marketing, Customer Service and Operations Managers to ensure common goals are in support of product group objectives.

What You Will Do:

  • Supporting the manufacturing operation and Product Groups by managing specific technical functions.
  • Supervise manufacturing engineering and support functions for current manufacturing processes, new process justification and implementation, machines, equipment, tooling, work standards, CNC programming, gage planning and technical troubleshooting to provide the most efficient and economical manufacturing and assembly of quality products.
  • Manages a staff using computer aided design who provides graphic job instructions, and CNC and robotic programs to the machine shop. Facility layout and area allocations, and related regulatory compliance. Ensures optimum use of equipment and space in support of changing production requirements.
  • Coordinates release dates and availability of machines, equipment and material schedules to satisfy demand. Ensures implementation of modern technology and verifies the effectiveness of equipment and systems. Establishes standards and works with shop personnel to resolve problems to process, tooling, equipment, etc.
  • Work jointly with Marketing, Engineering and Customer Service areas on concurrent product and process designs to ensure products, and processes are of robust design and support economical production. Provides project management support for major systems and equipment installations.
  • Manage new product programs including coordination of product design, component processing, sales forecasting, customer support, scheduling and financial issues to assure meeting customer expectations while meeting functional and cost targets.
  • Adheres to established standards, policies and practices relating to quality, cost reduction, safety, and ergonomics.
  • Provide training, development and motivation for a staff capable of completing objectives and implementing cost reduction projects ensuring concurrent product and process design and meeting requirements of the manufacturing/assembly process.
  • Develops and maintains budgetary controls for the section, establishes and reviews objectives, and provides personnel requirements and future forecasts. Maintains awareness of new technology and evaluates its value to the profit center. Assists staff in developing and implementing new systems and keeps other areas informed of progress. Effectively utilizes Class A, 6 Sigma and Lean Manufacturing methodologies.
  • Other duties as assigned by Caterpillar management from time-to-time.

What You Have (Basic Qualifications):

  • Judgment and Decision Making: Knowledge of the decision-making process; ability to carefully evaluate the impact of emerging business situations and choose the best path forward communicating actions and activities that maximize organizational performance.
  • Capacity Planning & Management: Knowledge of tools, approaches and practices for determining production demand and ability to manage resources needed to provide satisfactory levels of service.
    • Documents major considerations of product promotions and analyzes their effect on production and required capacity.
    • Provides management reports on actual and projected capacity requirements.
    • Uses available tools to interpret forecasts and work out required capacity.
    • Participates in developing short-term capacity requirements for a specific product or plant.
    • Collects and collates key elements of demand chain used in developing capacity requirements.
  • Lean Manufacturing: Knowledge of the philosophy, principles and implementation approaches of lean manufacturing; ability to integrate and implement lean manufacturing philosophy into existing production and management processes.
    • Manages the adoption of lean manufacturing principles across the organization.
    • Teaches others about how lean approach integrates operations, customers, logistics and product development.
    • Consults on work cell design and plan layout in support of lean principles.
    • Consults on the use of lean approaches across multiple functions.
    • Trains others on key lean measurements and tools and techniques for measuring performance.
    • Participates in detailed planning for implementing and monitoring lean manufacturing.
  • Manufacturing Equipment: Knowledge of the electrical, mechanical and logistics equipment used in manufacturing; ability to safely operate, maintain, update and store them.
    • Monitors methods and requirements for equipment environment to ensure protection against damage.
    • Participates in evaluation and selection of new equipment.
    • Facilitates the coordination and integration of multi-vendor equipment environments.
    • Analyzes equipment history; monitors overall machine performance; evaluates planned upgrades.
    • Plans, tests and implements changes to manufacturing infrastructure and environment.
    • Ensures that employees are qualified to operate equipment effectively and safely.
  • Manufacturing Processes: Knowledge of existing product manufacturing methods, technologies and processes; ability to execute, plan, manage and monitor the entire manufacturing process.
    • Consults on key issues and considerations for delivering global, distributed processes.
    • Leads discussions on the history and evolution of manufacturing processes.
    • Oversees all activities for the organization's manufacturing environment; establishes best practices and policies.
    • Leads evaluation of accuracy and effectiveness of documented processes versus actual operations.
    • Monitors industry and other organizations for innovations in manufacturing approaches.
    • Champions the use of new and emerging manufacturing processes and methodologies.
  • Manufacturing Safety: Knowledge of manufacturing safety; ability to identify work-related hazards and perform necessary activities to meet regulatory requirements for the safety and protection of workers, environment and site.
  • Manufacturing Standards, Procedures and Policies: Knowledge of organizational standards, procedures and policies in manufacturing activities; ability to plan, guide, and monitor manufacturing processes for compliance.
    • Consults on development and implementation of cross-functional standards.
    • Participates in the development of organizational policies and practices.
    • Develops and uses control and monitoring mechanisms for adherence.
    • Collaborates with other functions on establishing and documenting joint standards.
    • Participates in defining architectural principles and standards for organization.
    • Ensures communication vehicles are effectively informing affected areas and employees.

What Will Set You Apart (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Operations, Supply Chain, Engineering, or related field.
  • Previous leadership/supervisory experience.
  • Previous experience working within a manufacturing environment.
  • Previous Lean Operations/Continuous Improvement experience.

Summary Pay Range:

$126,000.00 - $189,000.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
