Our Safety and Health Technical Services Group staff provide expertise in support of the overall BNL mission by leading the development and implementation of the Worker Safety and Health and Facility Safety programs.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
This individual would be responsible for the continued development and implementation of the general industry, construction, and mechanical systems safety programs managed by the Safety and Health Services Division.
This candidate would provide expertise, guidance, support, and leadership as Subject Matter Expert (SME) to Laboratory management and staff in areas of general industry and construction safety, as well as safety engineering (mechanical). In the course of these duties, this individual would make recommendations and participate in the development and maintenance of management systems and programs, which support Laboratory operations, products, or services as well as for ensuring that our programs comply and stay current with applicable OSHA, ASME, and ANSI standards, and Dept. of Energy regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Technical Services Program Manager, this safety engineer will have the responsibility to:
Oversee the safety program areas including, but not limited to, compressed gases, cryogenics, machine guarding, fall protection, walking and working surfaces, excavation, confined spaces, and construction safety.
Support current subject matter experts with the goal of assuming that role in designated areas.
Develop procedures, subject areas, and guidelines, with input from stakeholders, for use by the Safety & Health Services (SHSD), or the entire Laboratory, in compliance with applicable requirements and standards.
Assist Lab organizations and departments with hazard identification and provide recommendations on controls and compliance.
Conduct audits, assessments, and surveillances of safety and health programs.
Respond to issues, events, and safety concerns, and provide support to the incident commander and line organizations to ensure that hazards are identified and controlled.
Participate in design reviews and readiness evaluations of equipment and facilities for environmental, safety, and health to ensure compliance with laboratory requirements.
As assigned, participate and/or lead investigations of accidents, events, incidents, illnesses, and injuries.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an Engineering, Scientific, or Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) discipline.
Three years of work experience as a mechanical, project, or safety engineer/manager, in an industrial, construction, or scientific setting.
Familiarity with mechanical and facility safety codes and standards such ASME, CGA, NFPA, and ANSI (An engineering background would be helpful but not required).
Interpersonal skills as demonstrated by performance as a positive driver for change regarding commitment to safety and compliance.
Willingness and aptitude to learn from our current Safety staff and to be a team player.
Solid safety-based reasoning skills.
Strong interpersonal and time management skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A master’s degree in an Engineering, Scientific, or Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) discipline is preferred.
Seven years of work experience as a mechanical, project, or safety engineer/manager, in an industrial, construction, or scientific setting.
Experience applying Federal, local, and industry codes and regulations, specifically OSHA 1910 and/or 1926.
Safety Professional (ASP/CSP) or Engineering (PE) credentials, or the ability to obtain those credentials in a short period of time, is highly desirable.
Other relevant safety or professional certifications will be valued.
Previous work experience in a Department of Energy facility.
Customer service skills and ability to work as a team are essential.
Additional Information:
Possession of a valid driver license and satisfactory driving record.
Ability to climb ladders and scaffolds to perform inspections of equipment, facilities, as well as construction sites, and able to lift up to 30 pounds.
Ability to wear respiratory protection, hearing protective devices, and basic construction personal protective equipment.
This position may occasionally require working after hours or on weekends and respond to emergency situations.
On-Site Position.
Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $92300 - $135000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
