Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital program, is dedicated to healing the invisible wounds – including post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, anxiety, depression, co-occurring substance use disorder, family relationship challenges and other issues associated with Military service – for Veterans of all eras, Service Members, Military Families and Families of the Fallen through world-class clinical care, wellness, education, and research.

The Home Base Program is seeking a full-time Director of National Fitness & Performance Programs to lead, expand, develop, and establish exercise, health, and well-being programming among veterans/service members and families seeking services in a variety of clinical and non-clinical (educational) programs at Home Base sites across the country. Fitness is defined broadly to include the following pillars: physical, mental, social, and spiritual fitness. The Director will be responsible for setting the direction of the fitness and well-being programs and coordinating among all services under the general fitness umbrella. The Director will oversee national expansion, emerging opportunities, staffing, training, and quality assurance of all Home Base clinical and non-clinical fitness programs. This role is key in ensuring adherence to MGH and Home Base mission and policies, while ensuring the delivery of the highest level of care to veterans/servicemembers/families. The Director of National Fitness & Performance Programs will assist with exercise science human subject research with colleagues and external collaborators and the IRB. Requires discretion and judgment to organize priorities, complete tasks and handle confidential information.


Job Summary

Summary:
Responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and daily operations of fitness and wellness programs aimed at improving the health and well-being of patients, hospital staff, and the community. This role includes managing fitness program staff, creating and evaluating fitness initiatives, collaborating with medical and wellness teams, and ensuring that programs align with health goals.

Essential Functions:

- Lead national network development for the Warrior Health and Fitness program.
- Oversee staff’s provision of customized exercise programs to meet health care and fitness & performance needs of veterans/service members/families with conditions including orthopedic injuries, cardiovascular risk factors, metabolic needs, pain management, cognitive considerations, vestibular-ocular considerations, emotional considerations, and stress management.
- Maintain partnerships with national and community stakeholders, including but not limited to Veteran Centers, VAs, local VISNs, Wounded Warrior Project, and Warrior Care Network, international partners, and local organizations whose mission is to support veterans/servicemembers.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the hospital's fitness programs, including the design, implementation, and evaluation of fitness classes and wellness activities for patients, staff, and the broader community.
- Develop and implement comprehensive wellness programs that address a variety of fitness needs, including strength training, cardiovascular health, flexibility, and post-rehabilitation exercises.
- Work closely with medical and therapeutic teams (e.g., physical therapists, dietitians, physicians) to develop customized fitness plans for patients, especially those with chronic conditions, recovering from surgery, or undergoing rehabilitation.
- Manage a team of fitness trainers, instructors, and other staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating performance.
- Ensure that fitness programs are accessible to all hospital staff, patients, and eligible community members, with a focus on accommodating varying abilities, backgrounds, and individual needs.
- Develop partnerships with community organizations to promote wellness and fitness programs and increase participation.
- Requires up to 50% travel. Travel includes FL, AZ, MA, and soon TX.
- Site visits to ensure fitness & performance program delivery is of highest quality.


Qualifications

Education
Bachelor's Degree Cardiopulmonary & Exercise Science required or

Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required

Master's Degree in Related Field of Study preferred

Licenses and Credentials
Heartsaver CPR AED [CPR] - American Heart Association (AHA) required Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist [CSCS] - National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) required

Experience
Experience in fitness programs, wellness initiatives, or related health services, preferably in a healthcare or hospital setting 5-7 years required and Experience in a supervisory or a leadership role 2-3 years preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong leadership and management skills to oversee a team of fitness professionals, ensuring smooth program operations and high-quality service delivery.
- In-depth knowledge of exercise physiology, health and fitness trends, and therapeutic fitness techniques.
- Ability to design and implement fitness programs that cater to a wide range of individuals, from healthy employees to patients with specific medical needs.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with healthcare teams, staff, and patients.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple programs, schedules, and budgets simultaneously.
- Knowledge of health and safety protocols, particularly those related to fitness activities and injury prevention.
